Brief: Utopia Dystopia

For this mini project, I created an A5 printed and sewn book of 26 pages. The focus of the book had to be on Utopia or Dystopia or a fusion of both.

I went through quite a few ideas before choosing which idea I picked. But before doing that, I researched into Utopia and Dystopia.
Utopia: eu=good/ou=not + topia=place = Good/No PlaceA place that doesn't exist, for example the 'perfect place'. A great example of utopia can be found in the book called 'Utopia' by Sir Thomas More (1516). Within this book Sir Thomas More described a perfect society on an imaginary island.

Dystopia: dys=bad + topia=place = Bad Place
A place that is bad. This place includes deprivation and oppression and societies which is undesirable and fictional. But this place could also sum up modern day, the wars, poverty, starving, children dying, homeless people, and many more.

In my opinion, Utopia and Dystopia is different depending on an individual. For example, my utopian place could be your dystopian, whereas your utopian place would be my dystopian. So basically utopian and dystopian place only depend on you as an individual.

Anyway, back to the brief; the focus of my utopia dystopia book was based on true facts about my life from 1993 till 2008. I knew it wasn't going to be easy writing about my past which I repressed deep in a small box at the back of my head, but I thought it could possibly help my overcome my past since it still haunts me.

This is my cover I designed for my book.

The colours I used are red, black and white. Black and white are great contrasting colours so it would great for the difference of utopia and dystopia and the red used within my book symbolized love and pain.
